Are Electric Scooters Legal in Winston-Salem?
Updated on December 1st, 2023
In Winston-Salem, electric scooters and bicycles are subject to the following regulations: Riders must be at least 16 years old to legally operate an electric scooter. Usage of electric scooters is strictly limited to roadways, and riding on sidewalks is expressly forbidden. All riders are expected to follow the same traffic regulations that apply to motor vehicles, including obeying traffic signals, stop signs, and yielding to pedestrians. When concluding a ride, it's important to ensure that scooters do not obstruct sidewalks, driveways, or curb parking. Areas where electric scooters are prohibited include Old Salem, greenways, and public parks. While not legally required, wearing a helmet is highly advised for rider safety.
If you use scooters or bikes, you must follow these rules:
- You must be at least 16.
- Do not ride on sidewalks. Scooters can only be used in streets.
- Obey stop lights, stop signs and all other traffic laws. Under North Carolina law, scooters and bikes must follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles. This includes yielding to pedestrians in the public right-of-way.
- Do not block sidewalks, driveways or curbside parking with the scooter or bike when you are finished riding.
- Scooters cannot be used in Old Salem, on greenways or in public parks.
Not a rule -- but a strong recommendation: Wear a helmet!
